12. CONCLUSION

ETF distribution is changing again.

The ETF industry has changed dramatically over the past decade.

Assets have grown, product choice has increased and ETFs have become a mainstream part of global investing. What has changed alongside that growth, though, is the way products are distributed.

For a long time, ETF distribution was relatively easy to understand. An issuer built a product, hired a sales team, secured access to the right platforms and intermediaries, met clients and tried to raise assets.

That model still exists. It will continue to exist. But another model is developing alongside it.

Investors can now discover an ETF through social media, read about it online, compare it with alternatives, watch someone explain it on YouTube or a podcast and then buy it through a digital platform without ever speaking to anyone at the asset manager.

That may sound like a small change, but it potentially has much bigger implications for the structure of the ETF industry.
